About
the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship programme of the
Government of India for providing housing and livelihood opportunities to the
homeless and poor. The scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in
his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2015. The PMAY will provide financial
assistance of Rs 50,000 per household to build a permanent habitation, up to a
maximum of Rs 2 crore. The target population for the PMAY includes homeless
people, people living in slums, people living in unhygienic conditions, people
who are displaced due to natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes, and
other vulnerable households.
The implementation of the PMAY will be jointly undertaken by states and central
agencies through block grant allocation. The states/UTs will be responsible for
identifying eligible beneficiaries within their respective jurisdictions and
allocating funds accordingly. Central agencies such as the National Building
Research Organization (NBRO), National Pension Fund Corporation (NPF), National
Housing Bank (NHB) etc., will assist state governments in implementing the
scheme.
Haryana has been selected as one of the 27 focus states for the PMAY with an
allocation of Rs 1,020 crore till 2022-23. Out of this amount, Rs 100 crore has
been earmarked specifically for rural infrastructure development under the
Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
